LOGITECH SQUEEZEBOX CONTROLLER APP COMES TO ANDROID

LOGITECH SQUEEZEBOX CONTROLLER APP COMES TO ANDROIDSome of you might remember when we covered that whole Squeezebox Controller from Logitech before, and you’ll be pleased that it has come to Android.

This Application is able to access the user’s home Wi-Fi in order to control all the Squeebox players from the phone or the tablet. The list of Squeezebox devices ranges from the Squeezebox Boom, Squeezebox Touch, Squeezebox Duet or the Squeezebox Radio.

As you might have guessed, it was built by Squeezbox for its own devices, and the controls are “intuitive and seamless”. Do you want the command of your Squeezebox? This is the App for you.

Of course, you have to have a Squeezebox device in order to make this work. I guess that really goes without saying, doesn’t it? I figured I had to say it anyway. Still, here is something that is worth noting. This Logitech Squeezebox Controller is now available for the Android platform for free.

FIREFOX 4 ON ANDROID

I was excited to discover that Firefox 4 was released for the Android platform.  I use Firefox as my default browser on desktops for a few reasons, mainly the extensions.

My Droid (the original Droid) was less that excited.  It has grown tired of installing large Firefox packages that crawl like frozen syrup, lock up, and sometimes reboot the phone.  It begged me not to try again, but I don’t even listen to my wife – why should I listen to my phone?

Firefox is available from the Android Market, so I downloaded it.  Upon first run, it told me that my device was incompatible and I may experience trouble running the program.

It is at times like these that I play along at first.  I figure why not give them the benefit of doubt.  Sure I have an android device, sure I downloaded it from an official source, sure I downloaded the correct program… why should it work?

The browser did come up, in spite of the warning.  I asked it to download an extension (Adblock Plus), which it did, telling me to reboot to complete, which I did.  I went to subscribe to a list, per suggestion, which it gave me no way to do.  When I backed out, I was at my home screen and the phone was almost frozen.

This is not a good omen.

I got tired of waiting so I shut the phone down and restarted.  Even shutting down was difficult, as the phone appeared to have better things to do with its CPU than what I had asked it to do.

Firefox does not load quickly, via a comment in the market and my own experience.  I decided to try Options.  SECURITY WARNING: by default the browser saves passwords.  Clearing the cache took considerably longer than I consider reasonable.

As the other settings were taking their time also, I again gave up.  In short order, I got a message stating that activity in Firefox wasn’t happening.

Bye bye.

NANOLOOP COMES TO ANDROID, WITH ITS LOVELY, MINIMAL MUSIC IDEA

NANOLOOP COMES TO ANDROID, WITH ITS LOVELY, MINIMAL MUSIC IDEA

I think the first time I really understood handheld music making was when I first tried Nanoloop on Game Boy. While the more-popular LSDJ tracker is powerful, Nanoloop’s interface was unlike anything I’d seen before: aggressively minimal, it embodies in its interface design the feeling of a blank sheet of paper. Adding an idea feels like composition, like genuinely exploring open-ended possibilities and discovering what melodies may result. Now, Nanoloop – already on iOS – is available for Android, too.

It remains simple stuff, the sense of what a music maker looks like when designed for your hand rather than translated to mobile from desktop, studio-style workstations. There are six fixed channels, each assignable to a synth (FM, noise, or filtered wave) or a sampler. Then, each channel takes eight patterns. There’s a step sequencer, the ability to resample, and song editor with loops. The sampling capabilities are especially nice on Android, as you can now sample from the mic or load samples right onto the SD card. (The mic you can use on iOS, but not the SD card, of course.) You can export OGG files to your library, turning your Android device into a DJ-set-ready pocket music library, or send and receive projects via email. Via iTunes, you can even exchange files with the iPhone version, in case you have an Android phone and an iPod touch or some similar arrangement.

NANOLOOP COMES TO ANDROID, WITH ITS LOVELY, MINIMAL MUSIC IDEA

This isn’t a port of the Game Boy nanoloop, developer Oliver Wittchow is quick to note. It’s not for chip music, or emulating game consoles. It’s for … well, Android music. But make no mistake: while the tool feels fresh and native to the new platform, it also carries the spirit of the Game Boy version. And that spirit is handheld music making, not just the aesthetics of the chip, but the feeling of using a minimal device scaled to your hands, something you can use on the go.

Oliver tells CDM that he has used a lot of native code (via the NDK), as he did non-object-oriented C (not Objective-C) in the iOS version. He says it’s about 1:1 C and Java: “I could use the iOS code almost unmodified and get the sound engine and touch input to work immediately. I had an almost fully working nanoloop within few days – without any graphics though. Now I ‘just’ had to write Java code for GUI, file access, recording functions and the different menu structure.”

The results, he says, are a little strange if you’re looking at the code (lots of getters and setters, C mixed with Java), but it works well.

Android owners, I’d love to hear how this works on your device. Let us know – just be sure to fill out a bug report. As the Market page notes:

Nanoloop works on a variety of devices, including HTC Desire, Motorola Droid and also midrange phones such as HTC Legend and XPERIA X10 mini. However, this is the first release and of course it has not been tested on all Android devices yet. If you experience crashes or other problems, please report them via e-mail or the anonymous bug report form at www.nanoloop.com. Thank you.

Now if we can just have some luck with Bluetooth MIDI at our hacklab tomorrow, this could be another candidate.

Oh, and most of all, I’d love to hear the music you make.

nanoloop on the Android Market (a stunning EUR1 … that’s a no-brainer. Better than an espresso shot!)

For the historical record, here’s nanoloop for Game Boy on CDM – from 2004. It’s actually come quite a ways since that release, but the spirit is the same.http://createdigitalmusic.com/2004/11/updated-nanoloop-20-game-boy-instrument/

MOZILLA FIREFOX 4 IS AVAILABLE FOR ANDROID

MOZILLA FIREFOX 4 IS AVAILABLE FOR ANDROID

The Firefox 4 for Android is claimed to be a mobile browser that is up to three times faster than the stock browser on Android. Its JavaScript engine is added to enhance the speed. This updated Firefox was launched by Mozilla on March 29 and available for both Google’s Android Market and Maemo devices. And within 24 hours after being launched, it was downloaded for more than 7 million times.

This updated Firefox 4 for Android features tabbed browsing, one-touch bookmarks and browser controls that are hidden when they are not being used. It really helps users to focus on the websites they open.

Users can also capture web pages from their Android smartphone in order to view it offline later using the save-to-PDF feature. Then, they can share their websites via email, Facebook, Twitter, and Google reader. Users can also sync their browsing history, bookmarks, open tabs, form data, and passwords across several computers and mobile devices via Firefox Sync.

The Mozilla Firefox 4 is quite handy since it can easily handle video-heavy sites and web applications like email programs, simple games, as well as productivity sites such as Google Docs and others.

This Mozilla Firefox 4 is a significant launch for Mozilla since it takes a chance in the stagnant steps of the Google’s Chrome browser. From data showed by Net Applications, Internet Explorer is leading with almost 57 per cent of the browser market, and followed by Firefox (22 per cent) and Chrome (11 per cent).

ANDROID BE STOPPED?

HARDWARE NEWS

ANDROID BE STOPPED?It’s the subject I’m asking after reviewing ComScore’s many new mobile marketplace share data. One in 3 American smartphone users have Android — which was during the finish of February. It’s Apr now, so the numbers have been certainly higher, formed upon the three-month trend. Holy Moly.

Two months ago, ComScore disclosed interpretation for the 3 months finale in December. For which period, Android marketplace share rose 7.3 points; 7 points during the some-more new three-month period. Since the finish of September, then, Android marketplace share rose from 21.4 percent to 33 percent. To be clear: This is tangible subscriber share, definition the implement bottom of U.S. mobile users, not units shipped over 3 months.

Have we beheld which Apple has proposed to aggressively publicize iPhone 4 upon radio again? Android’s gains have been certainly the vital reason, afterwards there is launch of iPhone upon Verizon.

But Apple is treading water, with iOS stability the prosaic expansion citation with subscriber share of about twenty-five percent, again — this time 25.2 percent, up from twenty-five percent 3 months earlier. However, iPhone share rose by .09 percent, for the biggest gains between the top-five manufacturers — that’s 7.5 percent up from 6.6 percent. Samsung leads with 24.8 percent share.

ComScore surveyed 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers to accumulate the data, as well as that’s the helluva large sample. According to ComScore, 69.5 million Americans owned smartphones during the finish of February, up thirteen percent from 3 months earlier. Only Android as well as iOS gained share — 7.2 points combined.

By the way, ComScore’s numbers primarily demeanour great for the Verizon iPhone — the “most acquired handset” in February. But perplexing to cut the numbers multiform ways, we do not see where they lead to 1 million first sales, as the little analysts have speculated — as well as the Apple air blower bar of blogs as well as headlines sites shamlessly reported as fact. Remember, Apple as well as Verizon won’t contend how many units shipped, which isn’t standard of an iPhone launch of this stature.

Android’s smartphone subscriber gains have been zero reduced of unusual as well as clearly unstoppable. That puts Research in Motion, which share declined 4.6 percent over 3 months, as well as Apple in difficult spots. RIM is right away entering giveaway fall, from the height perspective. Android as well as iOS have been where the apps are. While Apple leads by perfect series of mobile apps, Android gains continually.

Developers typically go where the income is. As Windows PCs have shown, the height with biggest series of users offers the largest economies of scale. Android is headed in the right direction, whilst RIM’s BlackBerry OS is starting the wrong way. Apple is consistent, which is worthy performance, though the numbers need to be bigger to win the mobile height wars.

Answering the Question

Can Android be stopped? Should it be? The answer is complex.

1. As the Personal Computer marketplace has shown, standardization around the single, widespread height is hugely beneficial. Developers can write applications once which many people can have make use of of anywhere. Standardization additionally is great for ancillary hardware, such as peripherals. There have been outrageous benefits to businesses as well as consumers as well as to the ecosystem of third-parties ancillary the platform.

2. However, Macintosh’s marketplace share gains over the past decade uncover which developers as well as alternative third parties will await the second or even third platform. Since Apple non-stop the initial sell store in May 2001, Mac’s U.S. marketplace share rose from about 2 percent to scarcely 10 percent in fourth monthly calendar entertain 2010. Mac OS X launched in 2001, with meagre series of apps. There have been copiousness today, as well as there would be fewer or nothing if developers weren’t creation money.

3. The dungeon phone marketplace has prolonged upheld mixed platforms in assorted degrees of dominance. BlackBerry OS, Palm OS, Symbian as well as Windows Mobile were successful in varying ways prior to iOS as well as Android handsets debuted, in 2007 as well as 2008, respectively. Right right away the marketplace is combined around 5 vital mobile handling systems. Android, BlackBerry OS, iOS, Symbian as well as Windows Phone 7/Mobile. Windows Phone will reinstate Symbian, as Nokia switches first handling systems. These 5 (four by 2013) have been becoming different places though none’s upon all sides is nonetheless certain.

4. Microsoft-Nokia is unexpected the furious label able of rocking the market. As we posted dual days ago, Google as well as Microsoft have been the usually approach competitors between the vital handset OS developers. Android as well as Windows Phone have been protected by third parties — not Android, Blackberry or iOS. IDC predicts Windows Phone 7/Mobile will be second to Android in smartphone OS shipments by 2015. I’m doubtful of IDC’s forecast, for reasons eccentric of the marketplace intensity (like new longed for predictions as well as flighty mobile market). But if Microsoft as well as Nokia can get handsets to marketplace fast with great applications as well as services upheld by the handset maker’s outrageous production as well as placement network, Windows Phone could put the breaks upon Android — in any case of where presumably ends up in the marketplace share race. Quite possibly, rsther than than the single gaining over the other, fiercer foe for same handset manufacturers as well as developers could have approach for any or all of the end-to-end competitors to pull ahead.

5. Android’s fragmentation undermines the platform’s appeal. As of Apr 1, usually 2.5 percent of Android inclination ran the newest versions — 2.3 or 2.3.3, according to central Android Developers stats; that’s up from 1.7 percent dual weeks earlier, by the way. The others: 63.9 percent Android 2.2; 27.2 percent v2.1; 3.5 percent v1.6; as well as 2.7 percent v1.5. Android 2.3 expelled about 4 months ago. But the fragmentation is broader, with Android 3.x for tablets. As Nokia already has shown with Symbian, fragmentation diminishes the end-user knowledge as well as creates problems for developers as well as their customers. Just since Android gobbles up marketplace share similar to Pac-Man, doesn’t meant the broader height will yield the applications people wish many or can have make use of of simply enough.

6. Apple’s mobile height is the many constrained choice right now, as well as it will be until some-more of the competing handling systems — similar to Android, BlackBerry as well as WebOS — boat upon tablets as well as alternative inclination in further to mobile handsets. The cloud-connected device epoch is bigger than smartphones. Apple offers the height which beam from $49 iOS inclination to $2,499 Mac OS X laptops.

ANDROID DEVELOPERS REPORT ISSUES UPDATING THEIR APPS

A bug in Google’s Android Developer Console has left a large number of Android developers unable to perform basic functions within their developer accounts, leaving them without the ability to upload or update apps and view comments.

Frustrated developers have posted messages on Google’s Android help forums, highlighting error messages, file size errors and restrictions when trying to change feature listings and screenshots on their Android Market listing.

One developer reports:

The Android Developer Console is not working since 18 hours now. The website is shown but the application list is empty. This is what we see:

“Failed to load application list. Try again later.”

This is since over 18 hours now. We would like to upload new releases as we promised to our customers. We just got the first two complains. Why do we developers don’t get any information about outages???

Many other developers have taken to the forum to report they are suffering from the same problem, some expressing dismay at the fact a Google employee hasn’t acknowledged the errors despite the fact the issue was raised three days previous.

Those who were persistent enough have been able to upload and update applications, resubmitting requests via the Android Developer Console until uploads or edits were recognised.

With upload or edit functionality temporarily unavailable, it is possible some developers are missing out on issuing updates and bug fixes for paid apps, potentially affecting sales volumes.
